"As Earth Warms, Gardens Feel the Heat:
Gardening in a Future Climate"
Dan Herms is Vice President of Research and Development for The Davey Tree Expert Company. Prior to joining Davey, Herms served on the faculty in the Department of Entomology at The Ohio State University from 1997-2017, serving as Department Chair from 2012-2016. His research and outreach programs focus on the ecology and management of trees in forests, urban forests, and ornamental landscapes, including interactions with insects, soils, and climate.
Dan received his B.S. in Landscape Horticulture from Ohio State University in 1982, his M.S. in Horticulture and Entomology from Ohio State University in 1984, and his PhD in 1991 from Michigan State University in Entomology with a specialization in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Major recognitions for this work include the L.C. Chadwick Award for Arboriculture Research and the Richard W. Harris Author’s Citation Award from the International Society of Arboriculture, and election as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Entomological Society of America.

"Treasures of Chadwick Arboretum"
Laura Deeter received her PhD in horticulture from The Ohio State University after studying road-salt tolerance in herbaceous perennials under Dr. Steve Still. She is currently a Professor of Horticulture at The Ohio State University in Horticulture and Crop Science and the Sandy and Andy Ross Endowed Director of the Chadwick Arboretum. She has taught a multitude of horticulture classes including: Woody and Herbaceous Plant Identification, Landscape Design, Sustainable Landscaping, Plant Health Management, Landscape Construction, and Ecology, to name a few. She was awarded the ATI Distinguished Teaching Award three times, the OSU Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching, the Perennial Plant Association Teaching Award the American Horticulture Society Teaching Award, Perennial Plant Association Service Award, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Ohio Landscape Association and Professor of the Year from Instructure.
Laura travels extensively speaking on a variety of topics ranging from taxonomy and nomenclature to shade gardens, design, color, and specialty gardens and plants. At home she gardens on her tenth of an acre with her hubby, four dogs, 100 pink plastic flamingos and counts her 300+ species of perennials as dear friends.
Harvesting Seeds
Holly received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Zoology, Sociology/Anthropology, and Environmental Studies from Ohio Wesleyan University in 2017. Holly earned her Master of Science in Environmental Studies from Ohio University in 2019, focusing on black vulture range expansion and human wildlife conflict.
As the Science and Conservation Manager at The Dawes Arboretum, Holly manages research project development, implementation and evaluation of project outcomes. Holly focuses on inspiring others through sharing the outcomes of research at The Arboretum. She also manages the collection of native seed for use in restoration and conservation at The Arboretum. Holly has led the collection over $100,000 worth of native seed in three years. To prepare the future leaders in conservation, Holly manages the Advanced Training Program comprised of AmeriCorps volunteers, interns and residency programs.
Holly has a breadth of research experience, analyzing feather degrading bacteria on common yard birds, bacterial load and monitoring of avian nest boxes, diet and paternity studies of captive bird species, phenology monitoring of various taxa, black vulture range expansion and human wildlife conflict, right-of-way vegetation and wildlife presence and reforestation/restoration research.
Holly evaluates current research projects and communicates outcomes to the scientific community as well as the general public. Holly involves the community in conservation research by creating opportunities in various citizen science programs or restoration initiatives.
Holly serves as President of the Wild Ones Columbus chapter and Director on the Wild Ones national board of directors.

"Creating and Connecting a Native Plant Corridor"
Susan Studer King is an experienced gardener, former flower farmer and advocate for native plants and conservation gardens. She previously worked as the Digital Content Director at Floret, a flower farm and seed company featured in the Magnolia Network show, Growing Floret. Susan is an active volunteer with the Licking Land Trust and serves as an advisor for Ace of Clubs 4-H, which designed and planted the pollinator garden in the Kinetic "pocket park" in downtown Granville. Susan helped to establish Licking County Pollinator Pathway, which promotes native plant landscapes and works to connect public parks and private land to create a continuous corridor of pollinator-friendly habitat. In addition to teaching seed sowing workshops, Susan has organized numerous Pollinator Pathway events including a native plant sale, prairie seed collection event, plant swap and the upcoming Bradford Pear "Bounty" program. She received the 2023 Rita Kipp Community Engagement Award from The League of Women Voters of Licking County for her work with Pollinator Pathway.

"A Green Revival: Cultivating Gardens for People, Place and Plants"
Susan Betz has been actively involved in growing and using herbs to educate the public about gardening and the natural world for more than 35 years. She’s hard-pressed to name a favorite herb, however -- she loves them all and considers herbs a way of life! She is an Honorary Master Gardener, a member of the International Herb Association, Garden Communicators, the Ecological Landscape Alliance, and the National Garden Bureau. Susan is a life member of the Herb Society of America (HSA) and received The Society’s Helen D. Conway, Little Medal of Honor, in 2018. She is a charter member of HSA’s Native Herb Conservation committee and the Society’s sustainable garden initiative. Susan currently serves on HSA’s Notable Native Herb program and is a contributing author to HSA’s native herb fact sheets published annually. She is the author of Magical Moons & Seasonal Circles, Stepping into the Circle of the Seasons and Neighboring with Nature/Native Herbs for Pleasure and Purpose and Herbal Houseplants, How to Grow Beautiful Herbs Indoors, For Flavor, Fragrance and Fun.
